Baptism

We are delighted to baptise children or anyone who has never been baptised before. Baptism (also known as Christening) is a beautiful gift from God – a sign of new birth, of complete forgiveness and acceptance, of the hope of eternal life and of belonging to a loving community.

To have a baptism in either St Cuthbert’s or St Hilda’s, you either need to live in the parish (see image) or have a connection with the church. Baptisms usually take place at 3pm on the second and fourth Sunday of the month.

Before your service, we expect you to attend a one hour baptism preparation session where the parents and Godparents will learn about baptism and the practical arrangements for the service. These are usually on the first Monday of the month from 6pm – 7pm in St Hilda’s.

To book a baptism service, please pop in to St Hilda’s Church between 10:30am and 11am on Sundays between 10am and 1pm on Tuesdays, or between 10:30am and 11am on Thursdays, or come to St Cuthbert’s Church between 12:30pm and 1pm on Sundays.  Ask for Jane the Vicar or Sue Garner. You are also very welcome to come to one of our Sunday services.

For more information for children’s baptisms email susan_garner911@hotmail.co.uk or call 07737481406.  For adult baptisms contact the vicar on kirkvicar@gmail.com or call 07753123200.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Godparent and who can be one?

The role of a godparent is to help the parent bring up the child in the Christian faith. To be a godparent you must be baptised yourself. Traditionally there have been three godparents for each child and two of the godparents must be the same sex as the child. Some people choose to have more than three godparents for their child. A godparent should be at least 16 years old.

How long does the service last?

About 30 minutes with the opportunity to take pictures after the service.

Is there a limit to numbers?

Each service will have up to two families and St Cuthbert’s can seat 250 people. Therefore if you are expecting more than 125 guests, please mention this when booking or at your baptism preparation session.

How much does it cost?

Baptisms are free. As churches are beautiful buildings and are costly to care for, you or your guests may wish to make a donation after the service. There will be a collection plate by the door as everyone leaves.
